Chinese Ambassador Supports UPWARDS

At the invitation of Mrs. Doris Kargbo, National Coordinator of United Programme for Women in Agriculture, Rural Development and Social Services (UPWARDS), H. E. Ambassador of the People's Republic of China Cheng Wenju participated in the formal launching of UPWARDS in Mapaki, Paki Masabong Chiefdom, Bombali District on December 14, 2005. Among the other distinguished guests, H. E. Vice President Solomen Berewa, Respective Ministers of Agriculture, Tourism and Northern Province, Deputy Minister of Development and Economic Planning and Representative of UNDP graced the occasion, during which Ambassador Cheng made a financial contribution in the sum of three million Leone to UPWORDS. This gesture was highly appreciated by the organization itself and the local people of Paki Masabong Chiefdom.

According to the introduction of Mrs. Doris Kargbo, UPWARDS is an indigenous non-governmental organization that is poised to create opportunities for underprivileged Sierra Leoneans, especially rural women and youths, to improve their socio-economic status through a systematic and coordinated implementation of programmes that would guarantee sustained livelihood and poverty alleviation.
