2006-02-10 00:00

On February 9 2006, King Harman Road Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone witnessed a joyful and exciting ceremony when H. E. Chinese Ambassador Cheng Wenju formally launched a cataract recovery programme in the short name of "Brightness Project". Under the financial support of Chinese Embassy, this project was to be implemented by the Chinese Medical Team from Hunan Province in collaboration with  King Harman Road Hospital.

Disclosed by Ambassador Cheng, the idea of setting up this project was inspired by the magnanimous act of the Chinese medical expert Dr. Yue Hui who had offered to conduct cataract surgeries for over 30 patients and financed the expenses out of his own pocket. In order to help more local cataract sufferers who cannot afford surgeries  get rid of the illness and return to their normal lives as builders of Sierra Leone, Ambassador Cheng decided to initiate this Brightness Project so as to bring more brightness to Sierra Leonean brothers and sisters. It was expected that by the end of the year of 2006, around 150 cataract sufferers would have been treated with most of the medical expenses (80 thousand Leone per patient) covered by Chinese Embassy. Speaking about the future medical cooperation, Ambassador Cheng hoped that the Sierra Leonean government and all walks of life would render even more understanding and support to Chinese Medical Team so that the effect of Chinese medical assistance would be further enhanced and more local patients could benefit.

Hon. Minister of Health and Sanitation Mrs. Abator Thomas in her speech sang high praise for the Ambassador's imitative of establishing Brightness Project and on behalf of the Sierra Leonean government and people expressed heartfelt gratitude for the kind help. The Minister also extended her appreciation to the Chinese medical experts for their commitment to eliminating sufferings of local people and improving the healthcare quality in Sierra Leone.

Before the end of the ceremony, under the guidance of the Chinese Medical Team leader Mrs. Qian Hongyan, the Ambassador and Minister together with other guests conducted a tour at  King Harman Road Hospital and exchange ideas and feelings with some of the cataract patients who were fully satisfied with the surgery effect.
